OATUU Builds College for trade unionists

A new labour college that will train trade union leaders in Africa is to be constructed in Accra and named after Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The project is being undertaken by the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), with financial support from the Government of China.

The Vice-President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, cut the sod for work to commence on the first phase of the project yesterday. It includes the construction of a students dormitory estimated at five million dollars and which can accommodate 170 students. The second phase will involve the construction of class rooms, administrative block, an auditorium and a library.

Vice President Mahama said it was an honour for the country to have OATTUU's headquarters located here as well as its labour college. He expressed the conviction that the college would help to strengthen the intellectual capacity of African Trade Union leaders and through the courses it offers, enable unionists appreciate the intricate nature of governance in developing economics in Africa. He expressed gratitude to the the Government of China and the All-China Federation of Trade Unions and the workers of China for their solidarity and financial support for the project.

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Yu Wenzhe, said the project will serve as another symbol of cooperation between Ghana and China. He said the cooperation between China and Ghana has yielded positive results and expressed the hope that the joint efforts of the two countries will further enhance the development and growth of Africa.
