H.E. Mr. J. A. Kufuor, President of the Republic of Ghana, sent a message of sympathies and condolence to H.E. Mr. Hu Jintao, President of the People's Republic of China, after a major earthquake hit Sichuan province and claimed thousands of lives.

In his message,H.E President Kufuor said he had learned with great sorrow of the devastating earthquake which struck Chengdu, Sichuan province and other major cities and towns in neighbouring provinces on Monday 12^th May, causing extensive damage and resulting in the loss of several thousands of lives.

"On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana and in my own name, I wish to extend deepest sympathies and condolences to You and through you to the Government and people of China, especially the bereaved families." He said.
