President J. A. Kufuor arrived in China on the evening of 7th August for the Olympic Games that open in the Chinese capital, Beijing, on 8th August. The President, who arrived from London after attending the Emancipation Day Celebration in Trinidad and Tobago, was accompanied by senior officials of the Presidency. Earlier, the Foreign Minister, Mr. Akwasi Osei Adjei, and the Deputy Minister of Education, Sports and Science, Mr. O. B. Amoah, had also arrived in Beijing for the 17-day sports fiesta. H.E. President J. A. Kufuor is expected to attend the opening ceremony of the 29th Olympiad, which will begin at 8 p.m. (China time) and end at 11p.m. The President will also meet the Ghanaian contingent, to encourage them give of their best to lift the image of Ghana at such an august international gathering. In separate interviews in Beijing, the Deputy Minister of Education, Sports and Science, Mr. O. B. Amoah, and the Chief Executive of the National Sports Council, Mr. Prince Earnest Oduro-Mensah, are both optimistic about the performance of Ghana's sports ambassadors in the competition. They expressed the hope that the boxers in particular would be able to win their first three fights in the boxing division to more them into the medal zone. The Chinese authorities are making every effort to make the event a showcase of the development, culture and history of the Chinese people. Magnificent fireworks and an impressive gymnastic display by the Chinese are expected to feature prominently at the opening ceremony to underlie the huge presence of China in world affairs. Already an impressive new Olympics Stadium, which looks like a bird's nest, has been built in Beijing and the Beijing International Airport has also been expanded and modernized.
